At Cafe Brasil, a Java event in the capital of Brazil, it was announced that SERPRO, the government agency responsible for handing the tax system in Brazil, has applied for JCP membership. This would make the Brazil the first government in the world to join the JCP in a significant way according to Onno Kluyt of the JCP.
This is one of the latest in a series of moves in Brazil that seem to establish it as one of the world leaders in Java. For example, the largest Java user group in the world is also located in Brazil, with over 18,000 members. Of course, there is also the Javali project in Brazil, which is partially funded by the government. One of its goals is to release a fully open source JVM.
Some have even suggested that Brazil is the world leader in pushing Java technology forward. What do you think?
There is an interesting article in Simon Phippe’s blog that discusses this in greater detail.
Is Brazil the world leader pushing Java technology?
