Toward the end of the development cycle for J2SE 5.0, Sun made available to the
public several "snapshot" releases of the weekly binary JDK builds. These
snapshots allowed developers access to the latest fixes and changes made to J2SE
5.0 after the public Beta release, but before the final General Availability
release. Response from the developer community was tremendous.
Building on that enthusiasm, Sun is expanding the snapshot concept for the next
major J2SE release, code named "Mustang". Snapshot releases will be available
much sooner in the development cycle. Doing so will afford developers the
earliest, most comprehensive access to date of the next major J2SE release.
Some things to note:
* These releases are only lightly tested before being made available, so there
is relatively more risk of something being seriously wrong.
* You might find enhancements and changes vary from snapshot to snapshot as the
development cycle progresses. Features and functions in these snapshots are not
necessarily committed to the final product.
* Only the JDK binary and source bundles are provided.
* Documentation is very limited.
* If you're risk averse or inexperienced, snapshot releases should probably be
avoided. Sun recommends waiting for a beta release or later.
Please use the Project Feedback forum if you have suggestions for or encounter
issues with using the Mustang snapshots.
If you find bugs in a snapshot release, please submit them using the usual J2SE
bug reporting channels, not with the Issue tracker accompanying this project. Be
sure to include complete version information from the output of the java
-version command.
